The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
All you really need to know for the moment is that the universe is a lot more complicated than you might think, even if you start from a position of thinking it’s pretty damn complicated in the first place. -Douglas Adams, Mostly Harmless
In 2019, we invite you to explore uncharted territory. Our 10th One Book, One Michiana title is Douglas Adams’ beloved sci-fi classic The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Since its original inception as a BBC radio series, it has endeared itself to many with its humor, whimsy, and insightful reflections on humanity.
What begins as a typical day for Arthur Dent quickly evolves into something much more. After narrowly escaping the Earth’s destruction, Arthur and his alien friend Ford Prefect begin their adventure. Aided in their journey by an eclectic group of fellow travelers, they hope to discover the answers to many pressing questions, including the meaning of life and—most importantly—where to find a decent cup of tea.
The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy will be available at all library locations and in a variety of formats. We also encourage you to check out companion titles and movies to further explore the sci-fi genre. Whether you are a super fan or a newcomer, you are sure to find some sci-fi universe that captures your imagination. With over 40 programs held throughout the month, you will have many opportunities to engage with other readers. There will be exciting programs for teens and adults at each SJCPL branch, and organizations throughout the community are offering a variety of terrific events and book discussions.
Grab a towel, hitch a ride, and don’t panic. It’s going to be fun.
