Helsinki City Public Librarians
Visit SJCPL!

On the Public Library International Front!

Hannu Taskinen, Principal Librarian for the National Central Library Office, Helsinki City Library, Finland, and Erkki Lounasvuori, Chief of the Cable Book (Kirjakaapeli) (see graphic) , visit the St. Joseph County Public Library in South Bend, Indiana, on October 5 - 7, 1995.

Friday, October 6th: Here they are enjoying a game of tennis with two SJCPL staff members after a hard day of discussing the future of public libraries on the Internet (Helsinki City Library was the first public library in the world with a WWW homepage; SJCPL was the second).

The two SJCPL staff members are David Haslett, Head of Computer Services, and Ed Huff, Cataloger. Don Napoli, Director, remained safely behind the camera with observers Linda Broyles, Head of Reference and Information Services, her daughter Beth, and Joyce Hug, Internet Librarian.

Hannu in back court; Erkki at the net

Ed reaches back to return a hard, quick volley!

Dave gets a low one!

Erkki clobbers the serve as Hannu guards the net!

.... and so the battle of the NET went on all day ... and late into the night!

Final Score? .... to be announced!

Saturday, October 7th: Hannu and Erkki spend a little time at SJCPL's Reference & Information Services desk with Faith Fleming, one of our Internet librarians and instructors. (Click on picture to see full-size.)

Here they are in our Staff Internet Training Room, working hard to catch up on their voluminous e-mail!

From South Bend they leave for Niagra Falls and points east. Good luck and God speed, Hannu and Erkki!

Erkki and Hannu depart
