Mr. Napoli tries the Finnish Sauna

Finnish Sauna

The Finnish Sauna

Because of the recently passed US Telecommunication Act of 1996, we are forbidden to show Mr. Napoli and Mr. Taskinen in this sauna au naturel. But we are sure you can just imagine the two of them sitting there discussing the World-wide Web and other hot topics. We regret this form of censorship.

Saturday, February 10, 1996 - 6:00 - 7:15 PM:

Mr. Taskinen picked up Mr. Napoli at his hotel at 6:00 PM to take him to where he could experience the Finnish sauna. As they discussed the sauna ritual in the car, Mr. Napoli was surprised to learn that they were going to Mr. Taskinen's home where he, like most other Finnish families, has a sauna in his basement! This would be Mr. Napoli's first experience of the sauna.

It was already dark as they approached the Taskinen home and there were about three inches of snow on the ground. Mr. Taskinen parked the car in his driveway and led Mr. Napoli around to the back door of his home where Mr. Napoli saw two tourches burning in the snow at the foot of the steps leading up to the back door. Mr. Napoli asked "Is this where we come to jump in the snow naked after the sauna?" Mr. Taskinen assured him that no, they would begin and finish the sauna with a cold or warm (personal preference) shower inside, but would not be jumping in the snow tonight. Mr. Napoli was very releived!

As they both sat there in the sauna, Mr. Taskinen explained to Mr. Napoli some of the rituals and practices about the Finnish sauna. For those of you who would like to know more about these traditions, check out these links:

Totally refreshed and ready for an evening of stimulating conversation and a delicious Finnish dinner, Mr. Napoli, dressed in his best suit and tie, went upstairs at about 7:15 PM to meet the rest of the Taskinen family and their guests.

Mr. Napoli found the sauna extremely relaxing and the cold shower afterwards invigorating and is now thinking seriously of installing a sauna in his own basement in South Bend, Indiana (Sorry, no pictures allowed).
