Featured New Books

Guide to Tee Ball

Ned McIntosh and Rich Cropper, the authors of this informative and easy-to-read book, have more than 30 years combined coaching experience between them. Endorsed by Little League Baseball, the book covers everything from teaching the rules and positions of the game to teaching kids to hit, throw, catch, and run bases. The authors also emphasize the importance of keeping practice fun and maintaining the proper perspective. From breaking in a new glove to developing a natural swing, and including the regulations prescribed by Little League, this new classic provides coaches the advice and know-how to teach the next generation of baseball players. (Check the library's catalog for the availability of this title.)

Girl's Guide to NASCAR
There seems to be a trend lately for sports stars' wives to write books about their husbands' sports. Last fall, I featured Get Your Own Damn Beer, I'm Watching the Game!, a woman's guide to loving professional football by Holly Robinson Peete (wife of Rodney Peete). Now comes Liz Allison's The Girl's Guide to NASCAR. Allison is the wife of NASCAR driver Davey Allison (see Miracle above). Featuring a foreward by Darrell Waltrip, and fun chapter titles like "Baby You Can Drive My Car...," and "Rules, What Rules?" this little book is full of the ins and outs of NASCAR racing. Whether you're a girl or a guy, if you want to get in on all those conversations about racing going on around the grill this summer check out this title.

Potato Creek

Did you know that we have a big, beautiful state park within our county's boundaries? The six square-mile Potato Creek State Park is owned and maintained by the Indiana DNR. The park features a wide array of features for year-round family enjoyment (although if you saw my feature about sledding last winter, you know that the weather can effect your plans!). Featuring a Nature Center and picnic shelters, as well as bike rentals and swimming, the park might be just the ticket for your next family outing. Before you go, be sure to grab a copy of their flier.

Local Attraction

College Football Hall of Fame
The Football Hall of Fame is among the nation's premier sports shrines, preserving the history and ongoing story of college football while promoting an understanding of the positive values of the sport. The Hall of Fame is one of many programs conducted by the National Football Foundation to recognize, preserve and foster values developed through participation in amateur football.

Did you know...?

The Michiana area has a long tradition of semi-professional football, dating back to the early 1970's when the Michiana Hawks played in Niles. The latest team to play in the area is the Indiana Titans. Several of the veteran players for the Titans formerly played for the South Bend Stampede.

The Indiana Thunder is a full contact women’s football team in the National Women’s Football Association, the largest and fastest growing full contact women’s football league in the world.
