Social Networking A social networking site allows you to share information with others on a website designed for a specific purpose. For example, Facebook allows you to share up to the minute information about your life with your friends. Urban Spoon is an online restaurant review website where members get to rate and share information about restaurants.

  • Facebook use Facebook to find and stay in touch with long lost friends, family, and co-workers, here is the Library's Facebook page
  • Flickr lets you share your pictures with your friends online, here is the Library's Flickr Photostream
  • Pinterest is "an online pinboard," a "place to organize and share the things you love"
  • Twitter is "a real-time information network that connects you to the latest information about what you find interesting. Simply find the public streams you find most compelling and follow the conversations", here is the Library's Twitter feed
  • Urbanspoon lets you read "South Bend restaurants and reviews from critics, food bloggers, and friends", and post your own food reviews too!
  • Yelp is like Urbanspoon in that it lets you rate restuarants, but Yelp also allows you to rate other businesses in town, find reviews on Automotive, Nightlife, or Shopping businesses, for example
  • Youtube "allows billions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos, YouTube provides a forum for people to connect, inform, and inspire others across the globe and acts as a distribution platform for original content creators and advertisers large and small"

Search Engines

A search engine searches for information and compiles it based on search terms. Here are some of the largest, most popular search engines on the net today:

Metasearch Engine

A metasearch engine searches multiple search engines at once so you don't have to repeat your search on different search engines.

Computational or Answer Engine

This kind of search engine provides the answer by computing all of the data it has access to, instead of pointing you to another website that holds the answer. For example, if you enter "2+2" it will give you the answer "4" instead of giving you a page of links with possible answers.
