One Book, One Michiana
"The cycle of leaving children behind has not ended. Nor will it end as long as there is poverty, as long as parents feel that the only way to provide something better for their children is by leaving." - Reyna Grande, The Distance Between Us
This year, we visit a world most of us have never experienced, and we move from reading works of fiction to memoir writing. Join us for a look at Reyna Grande's vivid portrait of her early years in an impoverished Mexican village, her journey to America, and the complicated family relationships that emerged, at least in part, from years of separation.
Grande's book is an effort to understand and explore the hardships and conflicts faced by families who leave their children behind as they search for a better life in a different country. The most contemporary of our One Book picks, The Distance Between Us portrays one side of the immigrant experience and offers insight on a topic that is part of our national discussion.
The Distance Between Us will be available in a variety of formats, including a Young Reader's Edition. The Library and our partners have a wide selection of programs and book discussions planned, along with thought-provoking companion reads and films.
We're excited to announce Reyna Grande will be speaking at the Main Library on April 9. Full details are in the booklet. (Register here.)
This is our 9th One Book year. We're thrilled we've been able to explore books you may not have picked on your own, to have new conversations about a wide range of subjects, and to offer a unique group of programs each year.
Thanks for reading with us in 2018.
