Education & Experience:
  • High school diploma with additional specialized training in using computers.
Preferred:
  • Two years higher education or two years relevant work experience, which may include experience using and troubleshooting computers and software including Microsoft Office.
Hours:
  • Work a 16 -hour per week, primarily Fridays and Saturdays. Schedule will be arranged by Supervisor to meet the agency’s needs.
  • May work the specified Sunday afternoons at the Main Library.
Requirements:
  • Excellent customer service, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Strong Macintosh or PC skills with an ongoing interest in new technology.
  • Good eyesight.
  • Able to lift library materials up to 20-25 lbs.
  • Transfer to other areas of the library system as needed.
  • Drug testing and criminal history record check are required as a condition of employment. Any offer of employment is subject to the applicant passing a drug-screening test and criminal history record check.
Ability to:
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with library patrons, staff, and supervisor.
  • Learn and use the Library’s automated system.

Essential Job Duties:

Performs duties to provide basic computer assistance to patrons at the public service desk per service guidelines. Working under the direct supervision of the manager, the library technician will:

1. Assist patrons with basic use of the Library's public computers, and Library supported software and programs including OverDrive, the computer reservation process, print management system, and photocopiers.
2. Assist co-workers with technology.
3. Assist patrons with circulation services and directional and basic collection questions as needed.
4. Perform basic computer diagnostics within guidelines specified by the IT manager.

Substitute Library Assistant - Position open until April 18, 2014

Pay Range: $12.60- $17.02, hourly

Location: Main Library, 304 S. Main, South Bend, IN 46601
Education & Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year college or university. (Transcript required when hired.)
  • Previous experience in public library work desirable.
Schedule:
  • This is an “On Call” position, with no regularly scheduled hours. The person will be asked to work four or eight hour shifts: mornings, afternoons or evenings, on weekdays, Saturdays, or Sunday afternoons.
  • All library employees are required to work specified Sunday afternoons per calendar year at all facilities open on Sundays.
Requirements:

  • Excellent oral and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Skill and confidence in the operation of computers.

Job Statement:

Performs a variety of patron contact duties including assisting patrons with self-directed activities, handling circulation duties, reference, and information services at the various public service desks. Working under the supervision of the Human Resources Administrator, the person in this position will be trained and assigned, as needed, to work in assisting patrons at any of the public service departments at the Main Library or any of the Branch Libraries of the St. Joseph County Public Library:

1. Assists patrons of all ages with circulation functions, reference, information, and reader’s services questions in person, by phone, mail, and electronically.
2. Provide instruction in the use of print and electronic materials to patrons and co-workers.
3.Actively participate in training.
4. Assist with various projects under the guidance of the Agency/Department Manager.

Other similar duties as assigned.

  • Required to work 40 hours per week within the limits of the Indiana State Summer EARN Intern Program.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including some Saturdays.
Requirements:
  • The college student must certify that he/she has received and used a Higher Education Award (HEA), and/or 21st Century Scholarship during the 2013-2014 academic year.
  • Will not graduate at the end of the 2014-2015 fall semester or quarter.
  • Will enroll as an undergraduate student during 2014-2015 academic year.
  • Required to have excellent customer service attitude and manner.
  • Personal or public transportation must be used to reach library locations.
